Calving Multiplier Effect Controlled by Melt Undercut Geometry

چکیده
Quantifying the impact of submarine melting on calving is central to understanding response marine-terminating glaciers ocean forcing. Modeling and observational studies suggest potential for amplify (the multiplier effect), but there little consensus as under what conditions this occurs. Here, by viewing a glacier an elastic beam, we propose analytical basis presence or absence effect. We show that terminus becomes undercut it more susceptible both serac failure (calving only ice undercut, driven vertical imbalance) rotational (full-thickness behind grounding line, imbalance). By deriving stress thresholds these two forms calving, dominant styles determined principally shape melt-undercutting. Uniform undercutting extending from bed waterline promotes no effect, while experiencing linear greatest at zero are likely experience Our study offers quantitative framework where when effect occurs, and, therefore, route parameterizing in sheet-scale models.

There is a correspondence between ce...
متن کاملRobust shadow-mask evaporation via lithographically controlled undercut
Suspended shadow-mask evaporation is a simple, robust technique for fabricating Josephson-junction structures using scanning electron-beam lithography. The basic process entails the fabrication of an undercut structure in a resist bilayer to form a suspended “bridge,” followed by two angle evaporations of superconducting material with a brief oxidation step in between. The result is two overlap...
متن کاملControlled Growth of Rubrene Nanowires by Eutectic Melt Crystallization
Organic semiconductors including rubrene, Alq3, copper phthalocyanine and pentacene are crystallized by the eutectic melt crystallization. Those organic semiconductors form good eutectic systems with the various volatile crystallizable additives such as benzoic acid, salicylic acid, naphthalene and 1,3,5-trichlorobenzene. Due to the formation of the eutectic system, organic semiconductors havin...
متن کاملThe Keynesian Multiplier Effect Reconsidered
The Keynesian multiplier effect is reinterpreted and several issues that may have misled assessments of the effect of fiscal spending are discussed. It is shown that even in the textbook Keynesian framework some transfer policy ‘reduces’ aggregate demand and that public works spending may completely crowd out private consumption. Useless public works are found to be equivalent to transfers alth...
متن کاملTransition in the fractal geometry of Arctic melt ponds
During the Arctic melt season, the sea ice surface undergoes a remarkable transformation from vast expanses of snow covered ice to complex mosaics of ice and melt ponds. Sea ice albedo, a key parameter in climate modeling, is determined by the complex evolution of melt pond configurations. In fact, ice–albedo feedback has played a major role in the recent declines of the summer Arctic sea ice p...
